ON THE NATURE OF ANARCHISM:

this is a note from Sakban Rosidi on his facebook for Agib, Arief (Syamsul/me), Mulyoso, Hisyam, Non no, Dedy, Imam, Syahril, Trixie, Maftuhah, Agung, Albert, Faradina, and Hisyam, et al. talk about the NATURE OF ANARCHISM. let's understanding it mutually.

• The word “anarchy” comes from Greek and literally means “without rule”. When Proudhon (1840) declared, “I am an anarchist”, the term denotes a systematic set of political ideas that advocates the abolition of law and government, but in the belief that a more natural and spontaneous social order will develop. It is important to note, most anarchists believe violence to me mistaken and counterproductive, and many followers regard violence in any form as morally unacceptable.
• The defining feature of anarchism is its opposition to the state and the accompanying institutionjs of government and law. Variations within this ideology are united by a series of broader principles and positions. They are: anti-statism, natural order, anticlericalism, and economic freedom.
• “Anarchism is the negation of the principle of Authority”, said Faure, “since authority is an offence against the principles of freedom and equality”. In short, anarchists reject the state outright, believing it to be an unnecessary evil. The sovereign, compulsory and coercive authority of the state is seen as nothing less than legalized oppression operating in the interest of the powerful, propertied and priveleged. As the state is inherently evil and oppressive, all states have the same essential character.
• The anarchists reject the idea of social contract to replace the natural society with political or civil society. Thus it was clear that the anarchists sympathized with the famous opening words of Rousseau’s Social Contract: Man was born free, yet everywhere he is in chains”. The anarchists want to let us to live back in natural society.
• In term of organized religion, some anarchists reject also the authority of God. The idea of God represents the notion of a “supreme being” who commands ultimate and unquestionable authority. “The abolition of the Church and the State must be the first and indispensable condition of the true liberation of society”, Bakunin proclaimed.
• The economic system visioned by the anarchists is labeled as economic freedom. The tem is, however, defined differently by the anarcho-communist and the anarcho-capitalist. The last two terms reflects the tension within anarchism, that is individualist anarchism versus collectivist anarchism: ultra-liberalism vs ultra-socialism, extrem individualism vs extrem collectivism, sovereign individual vs common humanitu, civil disobedience vs social revolution, atomism vs class politics, egositm vs mutualism, contractual obligation vs sosial duty, market mechanism vs communal organization, private property vs common ownereship, and thus, anarcho-capitalism vs anarcho communism.
• Nowadays, the most popular and influential anarchist is Noam Chomsky (born 1928), an US linguistics theorist and radical intellectual. The term he uses is not anarchism, but anti-globalization movement. Media, according to Chomsky, have the capacity to manipulate ordinary citizens, which result in “Manufacturing Consent”.
• Having learned the ideas of anarchism, the questions are: Will you abolish the state? Do you reject God as the “supreme and authoritative being”? Will you live back in natural society, where the strongers freely oppress the weakers? Will you reject the right of ownership? If your answers to all questions are “yes”, then you are the real anarchist.
• My own answers are negative. I am still a Syafiiyah Frankfruter. (Maksudnya? Bermachab Frankfrut sekaligus pengikutnya Bu Syafi’, Kajur Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris, FHBM, UIN Malang).
